Strive Weekend Away

Highlights and reflections from the 20s and 30s weekend away to Studland.

Last weekend, a group of us had the opportunity of spending time away together in the beautiful coastal setting of Studland. Surrounded by sea, sand, and the stillness of nature, it was a weekend of rest, creativity, worship, and being reminded of our identity in Christ. We arrived ready for a break from the routine, and the weekend delivered just that. There was space to slow down and enjoy simple things painting plant pots, colouring postcards, and chatting over cups of tea. The creative time gave us a chance to be present, to unwind, and to enjoy one another’s company in a relaxed and peaceful way, while also waiting on the Lord.

Some of us started the mornings with a coastal run, taking in the fresh sea air and the beauty of God’s creation. Others embraced the chill of a sea swim, diving into the cold water with laughter and courage. There’s something about stepping out of your comfort zone even in the small things that brings you closer to each other and reminds you of the joy found in God’s good world.

The food was another highlight. Shared meals brought warmth and community from hearty breakfasts to comforting dinners, we gathered around tables to laugh, talk, and simply enjoy being together. Those moments, though seemingly ordinary, were rich with fellowship and grace.

But the true heart of the weekend was our time with God. We worshiped together in song, lifting our voices with readiness and joy. There was a sweet sense of unity as we praised, prayed, and leaned into God’s presence. Through teaching and conversation, we reflected deeply on what it means to live lives that are set apart. Iain MacGowan (Friends International Dorset) led us through powerful sessions, we were challenged to think about how we live out our faith daily; are we being shaped more by the culture around us or by the truth of the Gospel? Are we willing to stand firm for what we believe, even when it’s hard? We explored the idea of Gospel character, the kind that reflects Jesus in both boldness and humility. We talked about integrity, compassion, truthfulness, and grace, not as lofty ideals, but as qualities the Spirit grows in us when we surrender our lives to Christ.

As we packed up and left Studland, we carried home more than painted pots and coloured postcards. We came back with renewed hearts, deeper friendships, and a fresh desire to live differently, not conformed, but transformed, walking as reflections of Jesus in our everyday lives.
